Collection: Daniel Renfrow
Daniel Renfrow is a freelance journalist and mixed media artist from Houston who is now based in New Orleans. They had a meandering childhood, and were raised in small towns in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas before making their way to Singapore and eventually to the Bayou City as a teenager.
Since obtaining a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Houston in 2014, they have spent the majority of their career as a writer and editor. Before becoming a freelance journalist and artist, Daniel spent time as the senior editor of Houstonia, the editorial manager of Houston Grand Opera, and the senior writer of CityBook. Their writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, AAA Explorer Magazine, Houstonia, CultureMap, CityBook, Free Press Houston, and DiningOut.
During the early days of the pandemic, Daniel turned to crafting as a way to make the best of their time spent in isolation. Although they initially found creative solace in the art of paper collage, they have now incorporated hand embroidery, sewing, and jewelry making into their sustainability-focused artistic practice. Daniel is a devotee of slow stitching, a type of mindful and meditative hand sewing centered around slowing down your thoughts and allowing your stitches to freely flow.
Daniel is fascinated by antiques and discarded objects, and much of their work revolves around giving new life to these kinds of items.
